In Biggles in Australia, Smith was the name of the leader of von Stalhein's spy ring in Australia. Very little was known about him and he did not appear in the story until near the end. Biggles first heard of him from West, the traffic control officer at Darwin, who told him that von Stalhein and the rest of the survivors of the See Taube shipwreck had been collected from Darwin and flown to Brisbane. The party had been ferried by a Qantas Lockheed which had been privately chartered by a man named Smith, who paid in cash.

Cozens, an Austrlian pilot working for the spy ring later filled in some biographical details for the Air Police crew. Cozens said that his boss was Smith and he was a foreigner, probably a Russian. Cozens had heard him speak in a foreign language to Ivan, another member of the spy ring and who was definitely a Russian. Smith had set up a number of bases all over Australia including Tarracooma in Western Australia and Daly Flats up the Daly River in the Northern Territory.

Ginger and Bertie later met Smith in person when they got to Daly Flats with Cozens. There they found themselves trapped in the farmhouse by hostile Australian aborignies. Knowing that von Stalhein, Smith and others of the spy ring would be coming towards the farmhouse from where the lugger Matilda docked, Ginger decided to shout a warning to them to fall back before they walked into an ambush. This had, however, the opposite effect of making Smith and his party hurry towards the farmhouse out of curiousity where they soon found themselves under attack. Smith was speared in the back while trying to run for safety of the farmhouse.
