In Biggles and the Plane That Disappeared, Sergeant Smith was a security officer of the Special Branch. When Biggles reported that a car with a C.D. licence plate (Diplomatic Corps) was at the farmhouse used by "Snifty" Chandler and Dr Paul Hammal, it was thought necessary to include a Special Branch officer in Gaskin's party which was being sent to reinforce Biggles in preparation for a raid on the house.
