The town of Mergui (known today as Myeik) lies on the Burmese Andaman coast in the Tanintharyi Region, formerly known as the Tenasserim Division. It lies about a third of the way up the narrow part of Burma, about 170 miles or 270 km north of Victoria Point. As Johns notes accurately, it was formerly the capital of a Thai province, which interestingly, had a French governor. Today the town is a fishing port and also stands near a land border crossing with Thailand. Johns also noted correctly that the town had a much more distinctive Burmese character to it compared with the cosmopolitan nature of Victoria Point. This difference is still apparent today.
Biggles and Mergui[]
In Biggles and the Lost Sovereigns, Biggles learnt from Laon that Captain Macdonald had been arrested and imprisoned by Captain Yomas. Convinced that this was the result of trumped up charges, Biggles sets off to Mergui to free Macdonald.
