In the short story All in the Day's Work, Lester Wolfe was a War Office cypher clerk who absconded with secret defence plans. He then made his way to Croydon where he hired an Auster, telling them he was heading for Glasgow. After take off, he turned southwards and set course for France instead.

Fortunately, Biggles and Ginger were, at that time, airborne in an Air Police Proctor and set off in pursuit after Algy contacted them by radio. Wolfe headed south over France and landed at Bron Airport, Lyons. Ginger alighted to follow him but Wolfe now showed that he had planned the entire operation meticulously. While walking towards the control tower (as pilots could be expected to do), Wolfe passed a waiting French Bellatrix airliner. He suddenly handed his portfolio of documents to a stout man, one of the passengers who then entered the aircraft. Faced with a dilemma, Ginger hastily decided to break off his pursuit of Wolfe and followed the passenger into the airliner since it appeared about to taxy off.

The Bellatrix took Ginger to Marseilles. There, Ginger, who had naturally flown without a ticket, had some difficulty getting past the ticket inspector to follow the stout man. Fortunately, a senior airport official turned up to let Ginger through. Resuming his pursuit, he found the stout man about to board a taxi. Ginger made a grab for the portfolio and then ran off, evading pistol shots. He sighted Biggles landing in the Proctor, ran towards it and boarded it in time to make a successful escape. It turned out that Biggles had called ahead from Bron to Marseilles and had arranged for the airport official to let Ginger through.

What happened to Wolfe after that was never described in the text. As Algy had briefed Biggles over the radio, Air Commodore Raymond considered retrieving the documents as much more important than dealing with Wolfe.
