A four engine transport aircraft built by the American Douglas company, the DC-4 or C-54, to give its military designation, first flew in 1942 and became the main transport aircraft of the U.S. Army Air Force and later the U.S. Air Force. After the end of the Second World War, the type participated heavily in the Berlin Airlift and was also widely used by civilian airlines. Surprisingly, it only gets passing mention in a few Biggles stories.
The D.C.4 and Biggles[]
- Biggles' Chinese Puzzle (short story) - Biggles and Ginger saw a DC-4 belonging to Air Vietnam at Saigon Airport
- Biggles and the Gun Runners - one was mentioned by Biggles as having been involved in the illegal transportation of arms to rebels in Africa. It looked fishy to Biggles because there had been a change of registration and the adoption of Ghanian markings. The aircraft was a Canadair-built Argonaut, a variant of the DC-4 with Rolls Royce Merlin engines.
