In Sergeant Bigglesworth C.I.D., Carlos Scaroni was a member of the gang led by Julius Hans Gontermann which specialised in spectacular high value jewellery robberies using two experimental prototype aircraft developed by German aircraft designer Ludwig Renkell towards the end of the Second World War.

During the war, Scaroni had served in the Italian Air Force with Escadrille 33 and had been posted at various times to bases in Abyssinia, Castel Benito, Benghazi and El Zufra. During his service in North Africa, he had met Kurt Baumer, who became Chief Test Pilot of the Renkell Works and who was a good friend of top Nazi Julius Hans Gontermann. It was probably through his contact with Baumer that Scaroni was drawn into the gang. Besides being a pilot, Scaroni had been supply and transport officer for his squadron and had hidden away valuable war stores at the various bases he served at and had not declared them to the British authorities at the end of the war. This proved extremely useful to the gang. They were able to use the oasis at El Zufra as a forward base as Scaroni had laid on stocks of fuel and oil as well as mines which were laid to keep unwanted visitors away. In the same way, one of Scaroni's former posts in Abyssinia was used as the gang's main base where again, the gang had access to fuel and oil as well as stocks of poison gas grenades to keep unwanted visitors at bay.

Among other things, Scaroni flew the Renkell Wolf fighter aircraft prototype for the gang. He shot down and robbed an aircraft out of Nairobi which had been carrying 43 thousand pounds in silver, the payroll for the Jaggersfontein Copper Mines in Northern Rhodesia. Later, he and fellow gang member, Max Grindler hijacked a B.O.A.C. Short Empire flying boat, the Calpurnia which was flying from Alexandria to England. Scaroni and Grindler killed the pilots and also shot and robbed a courier who had been carrying the regalia of the Maharajah of Mysalore.

Scaroni was killed when the Wolf fighter he was flying was shot down by Bertie flying the Spur.
